Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 106)

and option for Coastal Navigation (ASA 105)

Prerequisite For Course:  ASA 104 Bareboat Charter Certification (or equivalent experience) plus additional cruising experience.

The goal of this course is to achieve ASA Advanced Coastal Cruising competence by skippering at night as well as during the day, in all weather conditions suitable for sailing.  This offshore preparatory class is intense, challenging, and rewarding!  Topics covered on this cruise include:  standing night watch, use of radar and chart plotters, weather analysis, handling emergency situations, night navigation and piloting, spinnaker rigging and use, advanced anchoring techniques, performance tuning, reefing and heavy-weather sailing.  Optional Coastal Navigation Certification also covers detailed aids to navigation, fog procedures, and calculating current, leeway, set and drift.

Prerequisites:

ASA 104 (Bareboat Charter Certification) and ASA 105 (Coastal Navigation) are prerequisites for ASA 106 (Advanced Coastal Cruising).  If you do not already have ASA 105 (Coastal Navigation) you may pre-study and take it as part of this course.

Textbooks (prices include shipping):

Recommended:  Annapolis Book of Seamanship ($45)

If taking ASA 105  you will also need:  Coastal Navigation & Piloting ($66)

Optional:  Chapman Piloting ($65)

Spring Option #1:  "Local" Advanced Coastal Learn-N-Cruise (One Week)

Depart Bellingham for your one week, round trip class and explore beyond the San Juan Islands while taking advantage of myriad more advanced cruising experiences found in the waters of the "greater" Pacific Northwest.  Your course cruise plan will be determined by weather and to maximize learning opportunities.  Classes start Saturdays (11AM), return Fridays (1PM), and are offered April through June and late September through October.

Tuition:  $1495, plus ASA certifications ($20 each) and texts ($66 for ASA 105 and $45 for ASA 106).
Budget for one meal ashore. All other meals, moorage and fuel are included.

Course Dates (Classes start on Saturdays and end on Fridays):  May 5 - 11, 2012

Fall Option:  Desolation Sound Advanced Coastal Learn-N-Cruise (One or Two Weeks)

A one-way Advanced Learn-N-Cruise opportunity allowing you to discover Desolation Sound and explore further, while offering more variation than the standard round-trip advanced class does. The goal of this week-long cruise is to achieve the ASA Advanced Coastal Cruising standard by skippering a 30’ to 45’ sailboat at night as well as during the daytime, in all weather conditions suitable for sailing.

This offshore preparatory class is intense, challenging and rewarding! Some of the topics you will cover on this cruise include: watch systems and rotations, use of radar and chart plotters, weather analysis, handling of emergency situations, night navigation and piloting, spinnaker rigging and use, advanced anchoring techniques, performance tuning, and reefing and heavy weather sailing.

If you are planning to take this advanced course but would like to extend your time onboard, we are offering cabin rentals for the week of September 24 - 30, 2011. During this week the boat will be exploring the islands of Desolation Sound along with the rest of the San Juan Sailing Fall Flotilla. The cabins are reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. This week will provide you with extra experience in cruising/cruise planning in a beautiful and fairly remote cruising ground. This cruising week is “by the stateroom”. $1,400 per stateroom, so bring along a second person for no additional cost!  A $250 flotilla fee will be split by all on board for the cruising week.

Tuition:  $1,495 plus ASA certs ($20 each), texts ($66 for ASA 105 and $45 for ASA 106).
Budget for one meal ashore per week.
All other meals, moorage and fuel are included.
