What if I don’t pass ASA 104/Bareboat Charter Certification? Students sometimes ask us, "What if I don't pass my course?" Sailing should be fun and enjoyable, not stressful, but it also needs to be safe, studied and skilled to be successful. There can be many reasons that a student might not be able to achieve ASA 101, 103, and 104 in the course of a week or 3 weekends... a shortage of time to prestudy the course material... a simple desire to relax and learn at a slower pace... or perhaps simply discovering that sailing isn't something they love (there is a rumor that it might not be for everyone, though we are not sure we believe it). In these cases achieving Competent Crew Status can be a good goal and one to be proud of achieving. But if your goal truly is to achieve Bareboat Charter Certification (ASA 104) and you simply need more time to cement your skills, we have several options to help you achieve certification.
1. Retake ASA 104/Bareboat Charter at no charge: We can confirm your spot in a weekend ASA 104 course on a space available basis, 2 weeks prior to your desired course date. You may retake your ASA 104 certification during an ASA 103 course as well (either course will offer the opportunity needed to become certified for ASA 104, since the purpose is to enhance your sailing skills). $375 value.
2. Private Instruction to Assist in Completing ASA 104 while you Charter: This can be used to help complete your ASA 104 Bareboat Charter Certification at the start of your charter. We will pay for a full day with an instructor to assist as you work toward your ASA 104 certification. One day may be enough, although more time may be needed depending on your skill level. (After the 1st day, further days of instruction are available at $250/day). This is a $250 value.
3. Flotilla Stateroom: Rent a stateroom on a flotilla boat and sail with others, led by an experienced USCG Captain / ASA Instructor. San Juan Sailing will give you $50 off the stateroom rate. A great way to continue learning, have fun and advance your skills. Click here for information on upcoming flotillas.
